Kama Sutra’s Treasures of the Sea Foaming Bath Salts

I have been using Kama Sutra’s Treasures of the Sea Foaming Bath Salts for many years and love them.  In fact, when I reviewed them last year I said how they are my favorite Kama Sutra product.

“Kama Sutra’s Treasures of the Sea is a luxurious scented bath salt enriched with a blend of organic ingredients derived from dulse, kelp, sea salts and mineral oils. You only need 1 scoop for a full size 6 foot bathtub which will turn your tub water into the color of a tropical sea, with foamy suds floating on top as a sensual, fresh aroma fills the bathroom. We use the salts about 3 times a week and a tub lasts us about two months, so pretty good value.  Magnesium sulphate, one of the ingredients of Treasures of the Sea, is used in flotation therapy which makes the body more buoyant, so you feel the weight of your limbs and body floating away.  It soothes the muscles leaving you wonderfully relaxed and your skin silky soft and sensual.  It is a must have Kama Sutra product and one of the only products I buy on a regular basis and hate to run out of.  Taking a bath without it, just isn’t the same.”

Ingredients: Sodium sulfate, sodium sesquicarbonate, sodium thiosulfate, sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate, magnesium sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, hydrated silica, sodium C14-16 olefin sulfonate, fragrance (parfum), trticum vulgare (wheat) germ oil, algae, blue 1 (CI 42090), geraniol, butylphenyl methhylpropional, linalool and benzyl benzoate.

When I ran out of Kama Sutra’s Bath Salts, I decided to give their competition a try and bought Shunga’s Oriental Crystals Scented Dead Sea Salts in Ocean Breeze scent.

Shunga’s Oriental Crystals comes in a beautiful collectible black tin with a Japanese image of a man and woman embracing.

Incidentally, “Shunga” is a form of Japanese erotic art—a type of ukiyo-e genre of woodblock prints produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries, that featured explicit erotic scenes of sexual intercourse and masturbation.

The tin comes with a little plastic disk on a ribbon that makes it easier to open, although I just used my fingernails.  Inside, the tin is filled with course blue sea salts, a shell scoop and a floating white candle.

A small scoop of Shunga bath salts goes a long way.  The scent, unlike Kama Sutra’s, is very powerful, like perfumed soap.  I actually found the scent too strong for me and mixed it half and half with Epsom salts.

Used alone, a small scoop dissolved under hot running water with fill your tub with bright blue water, a thin layer of white foam and a very strong scent.  Rather than leaving the skin moisturized I found it left mine squeaky clean and the white foam doesn’t last very long (maybe 20 minutes).  Still, because you need less of the Shunga, it would last a very long time for 20+ baths.  I loved the little candle it came with and actually put it in the shell on the rim of my bath tub.

Conclusion

Overall, my preference is for Kama Sutra’s Treasures of the Sea over Shunga’s Oriental Crystals Scented Dead Sea Salts in Ocean Breeze scent for several reasons:

• Kama Sutra’s has a lighter, nicer scent
• I found Shunga’s scent too perfumed and overpowering
• Kama Sutra’s salts tingle and relax the muscles immediately while Shunga’s doesn’t (biggest selling point for me)
• Kama Sutra’s has velvety foam that lasts the entire bath
• Kama’s Sutra’s leaves the skin soft and silky, not squeaky clean.
