Bondage 101—Part 2 Bondage Toys
There are so many different types of bondage toys and ways to bind people, I can really only cover the basics here.
Rope—Rope is a bondage enthusiast’s main tool. There are tones of different types of rope, but only some are useful for bondage. I personally don’t like nylon or “man-made” types of ropes, although some work fine. I have fancy nylon cords from fabric shops that work well for some types of bondage that also leave very cool impressions in the skin. These are nice because they come in many colors and are silky smooth. The drawback with nylon is that is stretches and slips, so not ideal for predicament bondage, and definitely not good for suspension.
My favorite types of bondage rope include cotton and hemp. Cotton can be found in any hardware store and is cheap. It can also be dyed various colors. However, it is also not ideal for suspension as cotton ropes stretch and can tighten. Hemp is used by bondage connoisseurs or “elitists”. It is generally rough and itchy when first bought, but you can wash, oil and treat hemp to become as soft as cotton. Doc Johnson makes a good cotton rope for bondage in black and red. Rainbow Rope has a wide selection of all types of bondage rope in assorted colors. Twisted Monk sells various types of hemp and natural fiber ropes in various colors as well.
Hand Cuffs—When most people think of bondage, they picture a set of hand cuffs. Hand Cuffs come in several varieties from police cuffs to faux fur, and from stylish leather cuffs to plush cushioned leather cuffs. My favorite types of cuffs are leather and I have several pairs in different styles, quality and colors. Some, so called leather cuffs are made out of latigo leather, which is a tanning process that uses many carcinogenic chemicals. It is also a cheaper quality leather, so be careful what you buy. Only buy quality leather restraints from reputable craftspeople like the folks at the Church of Sinvention.
Collars & Leashes—Collars and leashes are getting more into D/s play in which the bottom wears a collar to signify their submissiveness to their partner, like a slut collar. Of course, many people also wear collars as a fashion statement (punk/goth/fetish) like a spiked collar with rhinestones, and others use bondage collars for purposes of doggie play to be lead by a leash.
Blindfolds—Blindfolds are fun to use whether you are a bit kinky or not. They come in so many types and many of them are not at all devious in fashion such as sexy satin blindfolds, sensual leather blindfolds, and even goggle blindfolds that light up!
Hoods—If you are really ready to get kinky and want to bind someone’s head fully, to block sight as well as muffle sound, a hood is your ticket. Hoods are great for sensory deprivation and help some people let go of themselves more completely so they are able to fully immerse themselves into the scene. There are lots of different types of bondage hoods including spandex hoods, leather hoods with zippers and even Puppy Dog Hoods for puppy play and creepy Hannibal Hoods.
Gags—One of the first bondage images I ever saw was a woman with a bright red ball gag in her mouth, eyes wide with fear. There is something about a ball gag that is very kinky (hot) visually, and it also serves the purpose of muffling your bottom’s screams. There are several types of gags including the regular type of beginner’s ball gag by Tantus, the rubber bit gag by Kinklab, O ring gags, and the medical looking Jennings gag.
Bondage Kits—Finally, we have bondage kits. These are great for people who don’t want to buy everything separately, or want a matching set. Kinklab makes some sexy leather bondage kits including the Experimental Bondage Kit. If you are not into leather, there are also PVC bondage kits. For a swanky seduction kit that is not at all intimidating you can try Nookii’s Slap & Tickle Kit. Want to play bondage in the shower? Sure, why not?! Then you need the Sex in the Shower Suction Cuffs by Sportsheets. And, the most popular and practical kit of all is the Under the Bed Restraints Kit.
